Small Spaces

What is it about small spaces that appeal to little kids?!

I think one of the things that made Harry Potter so successful originally was the whole living under the staircase thing.  Kids love that, because they all imagine they could live under the staircase - it's a really cool kid-sized space.

Anyhow, this photo was taken when Bridgette threw a gargantuan tantrum.  I can't remember the exact cause of it now, but it had something to do with not wanting to go to bed.  After the screams and the crying, she pulled out a dresser drawer onto the floor, climbed in it, and told me she wanted to sleep right there.  Once I let her do just that she calmed down.

A somewhat similar scenario ocurred while we were in Portland.  Poor little Bridgette had an ear infection and spent all of Sunday moaning/sleeping in the hotel room.  At one point when she woke up, she went to the hotel room closet, climbed inside, and wouldn't budge.  In her misery, I guess she found that small space comforting.
