Diving for Donuts

Bridgette had a SNYCHRONIZED dive meet this past Saturday morning.

She almost missed it.  First, as of Friday morning, I had no expectation that Bridgette was going to be diving in this meet.  I didn't think the coaches were going to try to get the 5 year olds "synchronized."

But, when I got an email reminder about the meet mid-day, I called Grandma's house and had her ask Bridgette about it.  Good thing we asked, or poor little Nelly, her equally pint-sized assigned dive partner, would have been left stranded without someone to synchronize with.

Then, 6:30 Saturday morning came. The meet started at 7:00.  I tried to wake Bridgette up - tenderly at first (opening the blinds, humming a song) - and finally, forcefully.  I resorted to lifting her out of bed and carrying her to the bathroom.  But all the cajoling and demanding in the world couldn't get her dressed in her swimsuit or her teeth brushed.

"I can just go at the end and do one dive," she whined.  Then, "just take me after warm-ups."  Little did she know we were already missing the 6:30 warm-ups.

Finally, Kevin walked into the bathroom with donuts and hot chocolate in hand (I had wisely sent him away earlier to purchase these things from our Bashas).  The promise of donuts, was enough to get Bridgette to concede to being carried to the car in her pajamas.  We "trunk-changed" into her suit, when we arrived at the pool.  She made it just as warm-ups ended, but at least in time for her first dive! Hair clearly not done, and still a little grumpy.

But, after completion of her first dive - she was happy as a clam!  She continued to be happy throughout the meet, and I believe was especially please with her penguin dive.  The kids got to do 2 serious and 1 silly dive.  The penguin was her silly dive, and she and Nelly waddle, waddle, waddled to the end of the diving board before going in.

She and Nelly placed 6th!  Out of 7, but Bridgette was thrilled to be getting a new ribbon color and a thing of chapstick, which they gave to all the participants.
